Exposure to germs at day care, school, home, and work is unavoidable. Colds and the flu are among the most common infectious diseases worldwide, affecting children 6 to 10 times per year and adults 2 to 3 times per year, lasting for up to 2 weeks. Colds and the flu cause unpleasant symptoms that can range from runny roses and coughing to headaches and fevers.

Dealing with a sick child during the school year can be quite a challenge for parents. In this double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial, 326 children from day care centres near Shanghai received either L. acidophilus alone or in combination with B. lactis twice daily. After six months of supplementation, it was discovered that the incidence of fever reduced by 53% and 72.7% in the respective groups. Coughing was reduced by 41.4% and 62.1% and runny roses were lessened by 28.2% and 58.5% respectively. This research was accepted and published in Pediatrics 2010, an official journal of the American Academy of Paediatrics.

Lactobacillus acidophilus NCFM™

Lactobacillus acidophilus NCFM™ (North Carolina Food Microbiology) is of human origin and was first isolated by scientists in the food microbiology laboratory of North Carolina State University in the early 1970s, thus its name.

Lactobacillus acidophilus NCFM™ is one of the most extensively tested and proven probiotic strains available today. L. acidophilus NCFM™ has been used as a probiotic culture in various dietary supplements and dairy based foods for more than 30 years. It improves and regulates immune functions.

Bifidobacterium lactis Bi-07

B. lactis Bi-07 is a probiotic strain that helps restore the beneficial balance of flora when taken during and/or after a course of antibiotics. This bifidobacteria strain is known to be involved in resisting the colonisation of ‘bad bugs’ in the large bowel, where it effectively works to balance and maintain our body’s natural immune defences. It also reduces intestinal infections by creating an unfavourable environment for bad bugs.

Recently, an independent study conducted by the University of Copenhagen, Denmark, found that B. lactis Bi-07 improved the condition of atopic dermatitis in young children (aged 7-24 months) in 8 weeks, with no adverse effects.
